So, the aim of this guide is to help you do the simple things that provide the largest return on investment. But first some background on how search engines work, and why search engine optimization is a good idea.

To index the huge number of webpages online (30 billion plus) the search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN, have created, or acquired, complex algorithms designed to comb through the web and deliver relevant results. These algorithms have always been closely guarded secrets, but by looking closely at the results page, and running "tests" on the system, many people have determined what it is they're looking for. This in turn gave rise to search engine optimization as we now know it. As for why SEO is important, depending on the source 75-90% of people find the websites they're looking for using a search engine, so the importance is easy to see.

Give The Search Engines What They Want

In the constantly changing world of search engine algorithms, I can't give you exact details. However, there are some important things that will most likely never change. When it comes to your website, there are two major things search engines look for, the first is your onsite content, and the second is how your website is seen by the rest of the internet. The easiest things to do involve your onsite content, so we'll start there.

Content

The most important words on your website are in the title. Make absolutely sure that your title contains the keyword, or keyphrase that you'd like people to search for. A good way to do this is to follow this formula: "Website Name - Keywords/Keyphrase". Continuing on, your headings, the h1, h2, h3, etc. tags, are also very important, so try to have them include your keywords as well. However, in the case of headings use them as they were meant to be used. Don't use headings as normal text, and don't have multiple instances of h1 headings. Search engines caught wind of this early on and penalize sites that abuse it.

Another important item is the anchor text used in links. The anchor text is the actual underlined text that goes between the "a" tags, and it should reflect your keywords and keyphrases instead of something like "click here." Then of course is the high quality, unique content you've added to the internet community. Make sure your content includes your keywords and phrases so the search engines know what your website's about. It seems as if ideally your keyword frequency and density should be somewhere between 3% and 7%. So, let's say your keyphrase is "car repair," then this phrase should be repeated 2-3 times for every 100 words. On top of that, you should be shooting for over 200 words per page which seems to be a standard among all search engines.

Offsite Optimization

Onsite optimization can take you a long way, but to really drive your traffic up you'll need to concentrate on link building. Unfortunately, this is not as easy as working with your content. The search engine algorithms have changed recently to include backlinks in the formula they use to rank your website. What this means, is that the more high quality, relevant backlinks you have to your site the more important your website is considered by Google, Yahoo, etc. The key here is high quality and relevant backlinks, as opposed to those found in link exchange farms. There are a few good ways to do this. The first, and simplest thing to do, is to submit your website to online directories.

Try to pick reputable directories that take free submissions such as the Open Directory project, and LinkCentre. Another great way to build backlinks is to write articles like this one. There are tons of websites that take article submissions and allow other webmasters to use them. However, to use an article the webmaster must also place the author's information which the author defines. It's a great idea to place a link, with good anchor text, back to your website in this section. Assuming your website presents valuable information to other users, you might also try contacting other webmasters directly.

Let them know that your website can serve as a great resource for his users. Depending on the size and popularity the website, you may or may not get linked. If you don't, shake it off and keep plugging away. My last little tip on search engine optimization is to be persistent, and patient. Search engines, specifically Google, have begun to value backlinks on the basis of longevity, so the longer a backlink survives the more valuable it becomes. This may mean it will take months to obtain a top ranking, but keep plugging away, your efforts will pay off.

We have to select primary set of 100 keywords through Overture Keywords Suggestion Tool, Digital point or WordTracker.

Search Engine Result Pages(SERPs)

Metatags like, title, description, keywords, extracts, subject, etc, will be integrated to the search engine result pages (SERPs).

Structure of SERPs
These 10 search engine result pages (SERPs) should have text links among each other and a must text link to the site map. Apart from this we should have all the general links to take the visitor to the main website. Concept of these search engine result pages is visitor can go to the main website from it but it can’t be vice versa.

Robot.txt
Robot.txt is a simple file to restrict the search engine crawler to crawl any part of the site. Suppose we are not interested to reveal or index admin pages or folder. We can simply do this by putting the robot.txt in the root.

Submission and resubmission
Website Submission should be done only manually in various search engines and directories and never through any software. If the required result is not coming, we can resubmit after every 3-4 months.

I recently had a self proclaimed SEO expert/consultant email to tell me that the HTML on my website was, in his words, ‘Crap’. That is very constructive, especially coming from somebody who professes to be qualified to charge for his SEO services.

He had apparently checked out my source code and come to that conclusion. I got to thinking: the site couldn’t have been crap or an expert would not have got so worried as to check out what I was doing. I was obviously a threat, and if that is the case, then the title of this article must be very close to the mark.

I responded by offering him my eBook on SEO in return for his expert services if he could inform me exactly where I was going wrong. Needless to say, I am still awaiting a reply. I am wondering how much he charges for teaching SEO when he fails to realise something as fundamental as that search engines are not too bothered about the formatting of the HTML as long it is understood. It is the text that crawlers are more interested in these days.

As I pointed out, my HTML must have been understood since the home page my website at that time (a week ago as I write) was at #3 on Google and #1 on Yahoo for its main keyword against 850 million other results, and also at #4 on Google for another page for the same keyword and also at #2 for another keyword. Quite frankly, if that is what ‘crap’ HTML does for you then bring it on – I will to do worse HTML next time!

That got me to thinking that if people pay guys like that for their advice, then perhaps they might be better doing their own search engine optimization. After all, it is not rocket science. Now, don’t get me wrong here, because there are many SEO experts out there that provide a great service and are also honest. Loads of people do not have the time to optimize their own sites, and these people are good at what they do – better then me. However, I know my websites, and I know what I am looking for from them. I therefore know more about the SEO needed with them that any expert would.

That is why I get such good results. Not with all my websites, I should admit, and certainly not with the minisite that this article is intended to promote. Like any article, this is intended to promote a website that offers a product that teaches what I know about SEO by means of screenshots of my websites and the HTML used to get #1 positions against very stiff and professional opposition such as Wikipedia, Harvard University and ‘About’. However, that’s another story and not for this article.

This article is about the cheapest or most affordable SEO. In my opinion that is DIY! That’s right, Do It Yourself! If you have the time. If not, then most of these other people advertising online can probably do a good job for you (apart from my email friend). The most affordable SEO is free – if you know what to do. Quite frankly, there is little to do these days. Google no longer pay attention to Meta tags, and Google are the biggest in my opinion.

Google spiders crawl the text in your HTML, look for H1 tags and Title tags and check out your keywords to make sure there are not too many. Apart from that there’s not all that much to it, apart perhaps for alt image tags. Even keywords are not all that important – Google spiders are very literary these days. They have been to Spider College learning English, and can now tell what you are writing about without you having to tell them.

Your keywords are now largely irrelevant. The spiders know – they are not stupid any more. They don’t need you to write these keywords over and over again to tell them – in fact, if you do then they get very annoyed at you treating them as though they were ignorant, and will in fact punish you for it.

Get used to it you SEO guys: search engine optimization is still relevant, but not as important as it once was. These educated BA spiders know what you are talking about (or writing about) and the most affordable SEO marketing is free, assuming you can write and don’t try to teach these crawling guys with the long legs what they already know. And don’t try to fool me that your HTML has to be perfect – I know different.
